How to Convert Colorful Photos into Black & White

In this tutorial, we’ll learn how to make colorful photo a black and white effect. There is a quick and easy way in Musemage, that is, applying Black and White filter. It is very simple; everyone can use it regardless of their skill level, bringing you lots of fun.

The following is the picture before and after change.

Quite natural, right? Let’s get started.


Open the picture, and use Curves to adjust its brightness. Click “Adjust > Curves”.


Next, choose Black & White from “Filters > Special Lenses > Black and white” in the menu bar, or “Color Effects > Black and White” at the side Tool Management.


Adjust the parameter of Contrast. The larger of the parameter, the stronger it becomes. Here, I’d like to change it to 15.


In order to let the girl’s skin texture has a strong contrast of black and white, we’ll use USM Sharpen. Choose this filter from “Filters > Sharpen > USM Sharpen”.


Adjust the parameters as below:


In light of the modification and tone of the whole picture, we can make a detail modifying or tone adjusting by using Levels or Curves. Here, I’d like to adjust the Levels. Click it from “Adjust > Levels”, and then, enter the numerical value into the left box to set the hue of the dark part in the image.
